Audience in "Our Nig"
I think that the audience in Our Nig is aimed not necessarily at one demographic, but at those who are undecided or apathetic across various demographics. Rather than being aimed at the wealthier ruling classes, or being a call to action for other free blacks in the north, this novel may simply be calling on individuals of all classes to get off the fence and take a stand for equal rights. This novel uses very personal imagery and language, in order to draw an emotional reaction from the readers. By fostering the emotional connection between the reader and Wilson's representation of the conditions under which black people in the north lived, she makes it difficult for individuals to remain undecided.
