Method 3 "Our Nig"
I wanted to talke about Method 3 on the class blog for "Our Nig." I chose to do this for the in class writing assignment, but as I looked at it further I wanted to blog a little more abou it. While I was studying the title page, I notices that there are texts that are bigger than others, bolder than others and different types of fonts. If a reader would skim over this page, "OUR NIG" would be the first and probably only thing he or she would gather from this page. By only noticing the phrase "Out Nig" the reader may assume the book was about a black slave, by the context, but also disguising whether the character in male or female. The subtitle is written in bold but elegant font, "Sketches from the Life of a free Black." The reader would get another opinion of the book because the first assumed meaning of the subtitle is that the character is not a slave but a free black that contradicts the first initial meaning of the first title. By analyzing the titles alone the audience is already drawn into the book because there are contradicting titles that state two different stories. I found it very interesting that the title page itself could have so much impact on a reader and how a readers thoughts about a book can change based on assumptions of the title page.
