The director's exigence for this movie is to show that not every immigrant can find the right opportunities and some may end up being victims to illegal businesses such as pyramid schemes. When people migrate to the U.S., they only think about the opportunities that are waiting for them but not the risks involved. The director intends to show these risks along with their implications to the audience.
In my opinion, the director has picked a very suitable issue to address because there aren't many of us who understand the lives of immigrants. The director has allowed us to get a sense of that by giving us a glimpse into the lives of the Cheng family both from the perspective of the mother and the children.
I do agree with you that the moves base exigence in about immigrant families and the hardships that they face. Most of the Novels we have read this year have had pretty clear and direct exigence claims. In the Movie Children of Invention I see that there is more than one main idea at play. What do I mean by this is that there are layers of emotions that leads each character to have their own exigence. For example Raymond's mom wants to provide for her children and live "The American Dream" while Raymond and Tina want to earn a million dollars. In most of the works we have read in the past the narrator is defined and the purpose of the main character is shown through the narrator. But in this movie there is no clear narrator which made me wonder are there two different messages being sent the Mom looking to make a easy quick buck, while Raymond and Tina work hard to earn a honest dollar. The children and parent was at opposites as to how they think about earning money.
