Agency in 'What is an autobiography'

Agency just like an agent can be seen as an individual that serves to represent or give voice to someone or something else. Pascal exclaims that "there is no autobiography that is not in some respect a memoir and no memoir that is without autobiographical information". Memoirs as well as autobiographies always rely heavily on the people that surround the autobiographer and how they influence him/her. An agent, therefore helps the reader understand the subject and the way they are being characterized.

Agents can be identified as either the writer or subject or character even but nevertheless an autobiography always needs an agent. Agency is key in an autobiography because it allows the reader to view different perspectives of the main character or autobiographer and creates room for interpretation. It is sometimes difficult to automatically understand one's life without seeing different views and aspects concerning that person, this is where the agent comes in. The agent gives power and voice to its subject, and this is exactly what is needed in an autobiography.
